Keynote Speakers


Prof. Gehan Amaratunga
Professor Gehan Amaratunga is the Group Leader of the Electronics, Power and Energy Conversion (EPEC) Research Group, Electrical Engineering Division, Cambridge University Engineering Department. He is also a Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge. He has published over 450 research articles in journals and conference proceedings. Professor Amaratunga is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical Engineers and a Chartered Engineer. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2004. Then in 2007 he was awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering Silver Medal ‘for outstanding personal contributions to British Engineering’. Research interests include: Nanoscale materials and device design for electronics and energy conversion. Novel materials and device structures for low cost, high efficiently solar cells. Power electronics for optimum grid connection of large photovoltaic electric generation systems. Integrated and discrete semiconductor devices for power switching and control.

Prof. Dong Hwa Kim
Professor Dong Hwa Kim is a graduate of Aiou University in Korea, Department of Electronic Engineering. He is the professor of advanced Intelligent Automated Lab in the Dept. of Instrumentation and Control Eng. Hanbat National University. His main research interests are Artificial Intelligence control, neural network control, Fuzzy systems and control, artificial immune control and its application, Computational intelligence, Natural computing intelligence, and Intelligent robot control.He has published many books, journal papers as well as national and international conference papers in control and fuzzy logic fields.

Emeritus Professor of UCL Anthony (Tony) Owen
Before joining the ESI, Tony was a Professor at the UCL School of Energy and Resources, Adelaide, Australia, where he held the Santos Chair in Energy Resources. Prior to that, he was Professor of Energy Economics in the Curtin Business School, Curtin University of Technology, Perth, and before that Associate Professor of Economics and Joint Director of the Centre for Energy and Environmental Markets at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. He has a PhD in Econometrics from the University of Kent (UK) and has held visiting appointments at the Universities of British Columbia, Colorado, Leeds, and Exeter, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (Paris), the UK Department of Energy (Harwell), and the International Energy Agency (Paris). Energy related consulting activities have been undertaken in Australia, China, Denmark, Indonesia, Norway, the Philippines and the UK. Tony is an Emeritus Professor at UCL, a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, and Past President (2004) of the International Association for Energy Economics. – See more at:

Prof. Joshua Le-Wei Li
Joshua Le-Wei Li (SM’96-F’05) received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, in 1992. He was, as a Research Fellow, with Department of Electrical & Computer Systems Engineering at Monash University, sponsored in 1992 by Department of Physics at La Trobe University, both in Melbourne, Australia. Between 1992-2010, he was with the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the National University of Singapore where he was a tenured Full Professor and the Director of NUS Centre for Microwave and Radio Frequency. In 1999-2004, he was seconded with High Performance Computations on Engineered Systems (HPCES) Programme of Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA) as a SMA Faculty Fellow. In May-July 2002, he was a Visiting Scientist in the Research Laboratory of Electronics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA; in October 2007, an Invited Professor with University of Paris VI, France; and in January and June 2008, an Invited Visiting Professor with Institute for Transmission, Waves and Photonics at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland. In 2010, he was invited to join School of Electronic Engineering at University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), Chengdu, China where he was selected as a QRJH Chair (or National) Professor and the Founding Director of Institute of Electromagnetics and also Space Solar Energy Applications and Microwave Power Transmission Research Centre. Currently, he is affiliated with School of Engineering at Monash University, Clayton/Sunway, Victoria/Selangor, Australia/Malaysia where he is a Professor of Electrical & Computer Systems Engineering and Director, Monash Multidisciplinary Platform of Advanced Engineering. His current research interests include electromagnetic theory (e.g., dyadic Green’s functions), computational electromagnetics (e.g., pre-corrected fast Fourier transform – P-FFT method and adaptive integral method -AIM), radio wave propagation and scattering in various media (e.g., chiral media, anisotropic media, bi-anisotropic media and metamaterials), microwave propagation and scattering in tropical environment, and analysis and design of various antennas (e.g., loop and wire antennas and microstrip antennas). In these areas, he has (co-)authored 2 books (namely, Spheroidal Wave Functions in Electromagnetic Theory (New York: Wiley, 2001); Device Modeling in CMOS Integrated Circuits: Interconnects, Inductors and Transformers (London: Lambert Academic Publishing, 2010), 48 book chapters, over 800 technical papers published and presented, with 9 inventory patents filed. He has graduated over 100 PhD- and Master-degree students, and mentored over 20 post-doctoral fellows and (senior) research scientists.

Prof. Li was a recipient of a few awards including 2 best paper awards from the Chinese Institute of Communications and the Chinese Institute of Electronics, the 1996 National Award of Science and Technology of China, the 2003 IEEE AP-S Best Chapter Award when he was the IEEE Singapore MTT/AP Joint Chapter Chairman, and the 2004 University Excellent Teacher Award of National University of Singapore, the 2011 Outstanding Professorship Award by UESTC School of Electronic Engineering, and the 2013 Golden Crown Award by Sichuan Province Government. He has been a Fellow of IEEE since 2005 and a Fellow of The Electromagnetics Academy since 2007 (selected member since 1998) and was IEICE Singapore Section Chairman between 2002-2007. He is currently the Editor of Radio Science and an Associate Editor and an editorial board member of a few international and regional peer-reviewed journals. He serves as a Committee-15 member of IEEE MTT-S since 2007, a Region Representative of IEEE AP-S since 2010, and an IEEE AP-S Distinguished Lecturer (2011-2013).

Prof. Morinobu ENDO
Dr. Morinobu Endo is Professor of Shinshu University (Faculty of Engineering, Shinshu University, 4-17-1 Wakasato, Nagano 380-8553, Japan). His current work ranges from basic science to applications of various forms of carbons; carbon nanotubes, new forms of carbon and graphite, nano-porous carbons, graphite intercalation compounds, Li ion battery, electric double layer capacitors. After receiving a M.S. degree from Shinshu University, he obtained a Ph.D. from Nagoya University. He is the present chairman of Japan Carbon Society, and he was one of the group chairmen of Industry-University Cooperative Research Committees, No.117 JSPS (Japanese Society for Promotion of Science). He also is one of the international advisory members of “CARBON” journal.

He has been invited at many international conferences and symposium as a plenary lecturer/key-note speaker. In addition, he has joined many international conferences as a chairman, organizer and advisory board member.

Prof. R.M. Gamini Rajapakse
He is a Senior Professor in Chemistry at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.

Mr. Srilal Weerasinghe
He has been actively involved in the activated carbon industry as a senior for more than 15 years overlooking businesses and researches. He has served as the Managing Director of Chirathma International (Pvt) Ltd, Sri Lanka, for more than 7 years, which is one of the leading activated carbon and charcoal supplier in the world. He has groomed this company as the most sought after activated carbon supplier of the world. This was evident his business ventures established in various parts of the world including USA, Netherland, South Africa, India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea , Australia and Latin America ( Colombia ) .

Furthermore, he has served as Executive Director – International Marketing of United Carbon Solutions (Pvt) Ltd – India. Also American Activated Carbon Corp (USA) appointed him as their Regional Representative (Asia Region) of their group.
